Is an MFA The New MBA?
less.. Vying for an edge in business? These days elite MFA (master of fine arts) degrees are the ones in demand. People with a design education "take bigger leaps creatively," argues Mark Breitenberg, liberal arts chair at Pasadena's Art Center College of Design, pointing to grads in management at BMW and Nokia. That's partly why design schools can be tougher to get into than Stanford or Harvard. While those schools' MBA programs accept roughly 7% and 12% of applicants, respectively, UCLA's MFA program admits just 3%. At the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), applications are up 50% over the past two years; they dropped more than 19% at Harvard and Stanford. What's more, schools like RISD are crafting joint programs to merge design with business. Next January, Art Center will send eight students to France's Insead business school, where they'll convert a design project into a business plan. Perhaps doodling through Finance II lectures wasn't so bad after all.

MFA가 MBA 대신 떠오르나?
요즘은 MFA/예술석사가 요구되고 있다. 아트센터의 브라이텐베르크 교수는 디자인교육을 받은 이들이 창의적으로 더 큰 도약을 한다고 말하며 BMW와 노키아 등의 경영직을 맞고있는 졸업생을 나열한다. 스탠포드나 하버드보다 디자인대학에 입학하는것이 더 힘든 이유가 그 때문이다. 스탠포드나 하버드의 MBA 는 지원자의 7-12퍼센트가 합격하는 반면 UCLA의 MFA는 3퍼센트 가량만 뽑힌다. 지난 2년간 RISD(Rhode Island School of Design)의 지원자가 50퍼센트 늘어난 반면 하버드와 스탠포드는 19퍼센트 하락하였다. 게다가 RISD와 같은 학교들은 디자인과 경영을 융합하는 합동 프로그램을 선보이고 있다. 올 1월 아트센터는 프랑스의 Insead 경영대에 학생을 8명 보내 디자인 프로젝트를 경영 계획으로 전환시키는 프로그램에 참가케한다.

아트센터는 아니라도 RISD랑 특히 UCLA MFA는 순수미술계열 프로그램으로 가는사람이 많을것이다. 퍼센트로 보는것과 실제 숫자는 상당한 차이가 있을것같다. 기사가 비약적이긴 하지만 이런 기사가 나는걸 보면 미국에선 디자인경영을 바라보는 태도가 더 진지한것?
